The rally highlights the appetite of investors for small and micro-cap counters, even though the broader market has been pretty flat this year. Consecutive Investments is the leader in this rally with a surge of over 250% in the reporting period.
Gayatri Highways, Excel Realty N Infra, Avance Technologies and Landmarc Leisure Corporation have all jumped over 100%.
Penny stocks trade at very low absolute prices, often below Rs 20. Their attraction lies in the potential for quick multibagger returns, but the flipside is extreme volatility and weak corporate governance in many cases. Even small changes in trading volumes can cause wild price swings.
Analysts caution that while some of these names generate strong short-term wealth, they carry outsized risks, from low liquidity and poor disclosure to business sustainability issues. Investors are urged to be selective and avoid chasing momentum blindly.
Market backdrop
Small and microcaps, which penny stocks fall under, have been underperforming. Over the past year, the Nifty Smallcap 250 is down 7%.
This underperformance shows the vulnerability of smaller counters, even as select penny stocks continue to defy gravity.
Saurabh Rungta of Avendus Wealth Management said that of the three key market drivers, fundamentals, flows and sentiment, "fundamentals and sentiment" are suppressing mid and small caps.
For penny stocks, this means that while the past year has thrown up several spectacular winners, the risks still exist in a market where sentiment toward smallcaps is turning cautious.
