Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty pared their initial losses and closed at a new record high on Wednesday amid fresh buying on metal, auto, banking and FMCG counters. The 30-share Sensex closed 76.17 points, or 0.25 per cent, higher at 30,658, while Nifty index of NSE settled 13.50 points, or 0.14 per cent, up at 9,525.

Here’s a look at the stocks and sectors that hogged limelight on Wednesday:

More mettle: Shares of Tata Steel surged nearly 8 per cent on Wednesday after the company’s consolidated net loss narrowed to Rs 1,168 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2017. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 3,041.88 crore for the year-ago quarter.



On a high: Shares of NIIT advanced over 10 per cent in intraday trade on Wednesday after the company reported 70 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 30.20 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2017 against Rs 17.80 crore for the corresponding quarter last year. The scrip closed 4.49 per cent higher at Rs 88.40 on Wednesday.

Sectorwise: Among the sectoral indices on BSE, the Metal index surged the most at 2.37 per cent, followed by Telecom (up 0.89 per cent), Auto (up 0.57 per cent), Capital Goods (up 0.22 per cent) and Power (0.14 per cent) indices. On the other hand, Consumer Durables, Oil & Gas and Healthcare indices slipped 0.76 per cent, 0.37 per cent and 0.30 per cent, respectively.



@fresh 52-week high: Nearly 100 stocks hit their fresh 52-week highs on NSE on Wednesday. The list included Anant Raj, Avanti Feeds, Bajaj Finance, Ceat, LT Foods, Dilip Buildcon, Dhanlaxmi Bank, EIH, Geojit Financial Services, Mawana Sugars, Manaksia, Maruti Suzuki, Sintex and Zuari Global.

Spurt in OI: Stock futures of CAPF saw the biggest jump in open interest (OI) at 330.22 per cent. It was followed by Infibeam Incorporation (up 42.51 per cent), MRPL (up 41.60 per cent), Allahabad Bank (up 27.73 per cent) and Tata Motors DVR (up 22.29 per cent).

Most active securities: Tata Steel emerged as the most active stock in terms of traded volume on NSE on Wednesday. It was followed by Suzlon, South Indian Bank, Unitech, Adani Power, Punjab National Bank and HDIL.
