ET Alpha Summit 2.0 is set to be held in Mumbai on October 8.
At the ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0, market veteran Prashant Jain will draw on decades of experience to share his perspective on navigating these shifts and positioning for the next market cycle.
In the session, “The 30-Year Investor’s Guide to the Next Market Cycle,” he will explore managing downturns, participating in recoveries and making disciplined investment decisions.
Market cycles are shaped by changes in earnings growth, valuations, liquidity and investor sentiment, with different sectors and businesses leading at different stages. For investors, the challenge is not simply predicting when a cycle will turn, but recognising how market conditions are changing and adjusting portfolios accordingly.
Strong business prospects do not necessarily make a stock attractive if its price already reflects that optimism. Conversely, near-term challenges may create opportunities in companies with sound balance sheets and durable earnings potential. The balance between business fundamentals and valuations can become particularly important as markets move from one phase of the cycle to another.
AI illustrates this tension. Investment in computing infrastructure and digital capabilities could unlock growth across industries. But investors must also weigh adoption rates and capital requirements against companies’ ability to generate sustainable profits. The benefits may take time to emerge and will not be evenly distributed, creating different opportunities and risks across the market cycle.
In India, opportunities across consumption, manufacturing, infrastructure and financial services remain significant, but identifying the right businesses requires a closer look beyond sector trends. While sector trends offer context, factors such as debt, cash flows, management quality and competitive positioning are critical when assessing individual companies. Economic growth alone does not determine investment returns, particularly when valuations and expectations vary across different stages of the cycle.
Diversification is also essential when market interest centres on a handful of themes. Spreading exposure across businesses and sectors, while aligning investments with personal time horizons and liquidity needs, can help investors withstand unexpected shocks and remain positioned through different phases of the market cycle.
The discussion will focus on three fundamentals for the next market cycle: business performance, the price investors pay and the risks they take. The focus will be on understanding how these factors interact as market conditions evolve and where investors may find opportunities in the next phase.
