At 75, this Padma Shri awardee picks multibaggers on D-St from Singapore
A Padma Shri recipient, a prominent Indian lawyer in Singapore in the 1990s and a Rs 650 crore equity portfolio on Dalal Street: Sat Pal Khattar’s testimonials would leave anyone intrigued.

Data from corporate database Capitaline shows Khattar has over 1 per cent stake in a host of second-rung companies on Dalal Street, including DCM, Sequent Scientific, Sangam India, Gayatri Projects, Strides Shasun, Intense Tech, IIFL Holdings, Transwarranty Finance and Suyog Telematics.

IIFL Holdings, Sequent Scientific and Intense technologies are among the stocks that have delivered him multibagger returns over the past few years.

As of March 31, Khattar was holding nearly 2 per cent stake in IIFL Holdings, now a largecap; but his stake was down from 3.07 per cent that he used to hold in December 2010. During this period, the stock has surged from Rs 82 to Rs 500 till May 2017, clocking a growth of 510 per cent.

With present value of Rs 300 crore, IIFL Holdings is one of the biggest stocks in Khattar’s portfolio in terms of market value. IIFL Holdings was listed on the bourses in 2005.

Strides Shasun is another heavyweight in Khattar’s portfolio, with a latest market value of Rs 141 crore. As of December 2008, Khattar held 1.27 per cent stake in the company. However, his present holding stands at 1.75 per cent. The stock has soared 125 per cent to Rs 905.30 as of May 31, 2017 from Rs 401 in December 2011.

For the year ended March 31, 2017, IIFL Holdings’ net profit rose 34 per cent to Rs 686 crore while Strides Shasun posted a 369 per cent jump in bottom line at Rs 445 crore.

Sequent Scientific delivered Khattar over 10 times returns in six years. He held around 7.75 per cent stake in the company as of December 2011, but reduced it over time to 2.92 per cent as of March 2017.

The stock has surged 870 per cent to Rs 111 as of May 31, 2017 from Rs 11.45 on December 30, 2011.

With current market capitalisation of Rs 230 crore, Intense Technologies is among Khattar’s favourite stocks. He was holding 2.67 per cent stake in the company during the second quarter of FY09, when the stock was trading at Rs 13. The stock has since risen to trade at Rs 105 as of May 31, 2017. His holding in the company has slipped to 1.77 per cent in this period.

Khattar is known for his services rendered to the Indian community in Singapore. He was the founder of Khattar Wong & Partners, one of the largest law firms in Singapore. He retired from law practice in 2000 and established Khattar Holding, a private investment firm.

The Government of India honoured Khattar with the Padma Shri in 2011 making him the first Singapore resident to be conferred the civilian honour.

Khattar was born at Bhera, now in Pakistan, in November 1942.
