Ashwani Bhatia takes charge as Sebi whole-time member

Bhatia will be the third whole-time member on the Sebi board along with SK Mohanty and Ananta Barua. The positions of two whole-time members fell vacant after the tenures of G Mahalingam and Madhabi Puri Buch ended last year.

Ashwani Bhatia, a former banker, has taken charge as a whole-time member (WTM) of the Securities and Exchange Board India (Sebi).

Bhatia, who was earlier a managing director at the State Bank of India, will be in charge of departments including the alternative investment fund and foreign portfolio investors, corporate finance and investigation, among others, said a release on Wednesday.

He will also be heading the market intermediaries regulation and supervision department, which regulates the brokerage firms.


Bhatia will be the third whole-time member on the Sebi board along with SK Mohanty and Ananta Barua. The positions of two whole-time members fell vacant after the tenures of G Mahalingam and Madhabi Puri Buch ended last year.

Buch was appointed as the Sebi chairperson last month.
