Sun Pharma Q2 profit falls 36% as litigation costs hit earnings
Sun Pharma reported a 36% decline in Q2FY27 net profit to Rs 1,989 crore due to exceptional litigation and acquisition-related costs. Revenue grew 11.8%, supported by strong domestic and emerging market sales, while US formulations weakened.

Sun Pharma reports lower quarterly profit despite revenue growth, as exceptional costs weigh on earnings while India and emerging markets drive business expansion.
India’s largest drug maker reported an 11.8% year-on-year increase in consolidated revenue to Rs 16,100 crore for the second quarter driven by growth in India and emerging markets. Adjusted net profit was Rs 3,162 crore.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased 4.8% to Rs 4,744 crore, with the operating margin contracting to 29.3% from 31.3% a year earlier.
“Our performance during the quarter was driven by strong momentum in India, emerging markets and rest of world,” said managing director Kirti Ganorkar.
India formulations was a key growth driver, with sales rising 17.3% to Rs 5,552 crore. The domestic business accounted for 34.5% of consolidated sales during the quarter.
The company’s performance in emerging markets was also strong, with formulation sales increasing 7.6% to $350 million. Sales in other international markets grew 3.1% to $241 million.
However, US formulation sales declined 8.2% to $455 million, accounting for around 27% of consolidated revenue. The US business remains a key market for the company’s generics portfolio, alongside its expanding innovative medicines business.
On the GLP1 market, Dilip Shanghvi, executive chairman, Sun Pharma, said: “Usually our experience says it takes 3-4 years to build a product. So, GLP-1 will also go through that phase. But even if you get a few percentage of the total patients, it is still going to be a very very large market.”
During the quarter, Sun Pharma received US approval for Ilumya to treat adults with active psoriatic arthritis, expanding the drug’s potential beyond its existing indications. The company also highlighted a preferred National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommendation for Unloxcyt in advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
“Beyond dermatology, we strengthened our cardiovascular portfolio through the licensing of lerodalcibep, a PCSK9 inhibitor, for markets outside US and China. We have started pre-launch activities across EU,” said Ganorkar.
The company’s research and development expenditure stood at Rs 778 crore, or 4.8% of quarterly sales, as it continued investing in its innovative medicines and generics pipelines.
Sun Pharma also said integration planning for its proposed acquisition of Organon was progressing as planned. Regulatory approvals had been secured in most regions, with the remaining jurisdictions proceeding on schedule.
For the first half of FY27, consolidated revenue increased 11% to Rs 31,284 crore, while adjusted net profit rose 2.2% to Rs 6,252 crore. EBITDA grew 3.8% to Rs 9,162 crore, with the margin at 29.1%.
