Bharti Airtel posts loss but improves margins in Q1; key takeaways

Mumbai: Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Thursday posted wider-than-expected loss of Rs 2,866 crore for the first quarter of fiscal 2020 against a profit of Rs 97.30 crore in the same period last year.

Analysts in an ET NOW poll had projected a loss of Rs 966.80 crore

The company witnessed an exceptional loss of Rs 1,469.40 crore in June quarter against Rs 362.10 crore in the same period last year.

Arpu rises
Arpu (average revenue per user) rose to Rs 129 in the June quarter from Rs 105 in the same quarter a year ago.

Customer base dwindles
Overall customer base stood at 403.7 million across 16 countries at the end of June quarter, down 10.9 per cent on a yearly basis.

Mobile data traffic jumps
Consolidated mobile data traffic was at 4,344 billion MBs in the June quarter, showing a jump of 94.2 per cent.

Revenues inch up
Total revenues came in at Rs 20,740 crore, up 4.7 per cent on a yearly basis.

Ebitda and Ebitda margins rise
The company's Ebitda came in at Rs 8,500 crore in the June quarter, up 24.2 per cent. Ebitda margin was up 6.4 per cent in the June quarter.

Tower Infrastructure Services
Revenue of Bharti Infratel for the quarter ended Jun 30 increased 1.8 per cent to Rs 1,726.20 crore compared with Rs 1,694.9 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

Home services
As of Jun 30, the company had 2.34 million customers in its Homes operations. Revenues from the operations were Rs 570.5 crore compared with Rs 574.5 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
