Yellow peas imports pull down prices of chana

Imports of yellow peas (white matar) in large quantities have helped keep prices of chana under check in the retail market during the last three months.

NEW DELHI: Imports of yellow peas (white matar) in large quantities have helped keep prices of chana under check in the retail market during the last three months. “Government agencies are importing more yellow peas because it is cheaper in global markets and is also a substitute to chana,” Pulses Importers Association of India president KC Bhartiya said.

State-owned STC, MMTC, PEC and Nafed have contracted for 10.4 lakh tonne of pulses in current financial year till June 25, of which 7.7 lakh tonne was of yellow peas. About 82,030 tonne of yellow peas have already arrived on various ports. “Private traders have also contracted to import 40,000 tonne of yellow peas, which are expected to reach Indian ports during next two months,” Mr Bhartiya added.

Retail prices of chana declined to Rs 27-35 per kg on June 1 from Rs 27-52 per kg on April 1, 2007. However, prices have firmed up recently as supply was hit by monsoon rains.
The current rates for chana in retail market stood in the range of Rs 29-36 per kg, according to traders. Earlier, prices marginally rose in June due to delay in monsoon in Maharashtra and other growing areas.

With more yellow peas expected to arrive in the country during September-October, its availability would improve, he said, adding this would continue to put pressure on chana prices.
