Upasi awards boost tea prospects

The United Planters’ Association of Southern India (Upasi) seems to be scripting a success story with its Golden Leaf India awards for south Indian tea.

KOCHI: The United Planters’ Association of Southern India (Upasi) seems to be scripting a success story with its Golden Leaf India awards for south Indian tea.

The three-year old competition aimed at improving the quality of south Indian tea has started to pay dividends, according to N Dharmaraj, the organizing committee convenor for the competition this year. According to him, the winner logos issued at the competition are being used by many producers to market their teas in various formats.

Such teas have started attracted premium prices in national and international markets. The competition has helped to focus the attention of leading packers on these teas. The packers have started to evaluate tea purchases on the basis of quality rather than by its origin, he said.

Encouraged by the success of the last three editions of the golden leaf India awards: southern tea competition, Upasi is organising the fourth edition of the competition jointly with the Tea Board. The final screening of the competition will be organised on February 18 in Dubai coinciding with the second Global Dubai Tea Forum 2008 slated to be held on February 19-20, according to Mr Dharmaraj.

The competition will be region-based for the mainstream category of CTC and Orthodox teas.
