Tea exports decline 20.2%

Tea exports from India during January to April 2006 has dipped by 11.52 million kg to 45.37 million kg, according to Tea Board estimates.

KOLKATA: Tea exports from India during January to April 2006 has dipped by 11.52 million kg to 45.37 million kg, according to Tea Board estimates.

Board sources said that the loss of the Iraq and partial reduction in imports by the CIS nations were the main reasons for cause of fall in exports.

Value of exports during the period was Rs 390.09 crore as compared to Rs 518.76 crore during the same period previous year.

The target set for India's exports during the financial year 2006-07 is 210 million kg.

To compensate for the decline in imports by Iraq and CIS nations, Tea Board along with the industry is making efforts to explore new markets like Pakistan and Egypt.

Tea Board sources said that it is expected that exports to Pakistan is to the tune of 20 million kg.

The board is also stepping up its campaign for overseas promotion for which it had appointed a reputed advertisement firm.
