Sugarcane farmers stir on dues issue

MEERUT: Sugarcane-growers, supported by the leaders of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), held demonstrations in front of Divisional Commissioner's office here and threatened a mass agitation if their dues were not cleared by Aug 31.
Thousands of sugarcane farmers, along with the RLD leaders, gathered at Ch Charan Singh Park yesterday and demanded arrest of the mill owners who they (farmers) allege have not cleared the dues from the last five months.
"We have submitted a memorandum to the UP governor about holding a mass agitation if farmers' pending dues were not cleared by August 31," RLD-district President Ch Yashvir Singh said.
The party in its memorandum demanded that the farmer's dues should be paid at the earliest and sugarmills start crushing sugarcane from coming October.
