Sugar traders observe strike in Punjab
The wholesale sugar traders of Punjab observed strike on Monday to protest the imposition of entry tax on the sweetener in the state from November 5.
According to Jagjit Singh, President of Punjab Wholesale Sugar Dealers Association, there was a complete strike by the sugar dealers in the state.
"The decision to impose entry tax itself was unjustified, we were told that it would be implemented from midnight of November 20. However, now the tax department wants us to pay from November 5," he said.
"We are against the move and are observing strike today," he said adding that if the entry tax was imposed from the back date, it would cause heavy losses to all traders who imported sugar from other states.
