MUMBAI: Sugar prices rose at the Vashi wholesale market here today on the back of fresh buying from stockists and retailers amid lower supply from mills.

Meanwhile, the government yesterday relaxed the sale of non-levy sugar norms for mills from weekly quota to fortnightly, according to senior Food Ministry official.

Now, mills will have to sell 42 per cent of their April quota in the first fortnight and 58 per cent in the second fortnight, the official said.

Medium sugar quality (M-30) spurted by Rs 20/70 per quintal to Rs 3,035/3,090 from overnight closing level of Rs 2,965/3,070.

Small sugar quality (S-30) also gained Rs 10/65 per quintal to Rs 2,965/3,010 as against Rs 2,900/3,000 of previously.
