Sugar output to reach 32-33 million tonne in 2007-08
Sugar production in the country is expected to reach 32-33 million tonnes during 2007-08 season against 28.5 million tonnes during the crushing season last year, ICAR has said.
"With favourable weather conditions, the area and production of sugarcane had increased substantially during the last two years," Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Director General Mangala Rai said in a statement on Thursday.
He said sugar industry is the country's second largest agro-based industry and sugar production is expected to reach a new peak of 32-33 million tonnes during 2007-08 season.
Rai, who is also Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research, explained that sugarcane was a multi-product crop and it was foreseen that the future sugar factories would turn into sugarcane complexes where the sweetener would be only one of the products.
"Ethanol is one of the ideal bio-fuels for use in the automobile and the Government of India has permitted blending of ethanol with petrol at 5 per cent, which is being increased to 10 per cent," he said, adding that co-generation is another proposition, which the sugar industry is looking for.
The present installed capacity of co-generation in the country is around 1,500 MW and the potential is estimated to be 5,000 MW, he added.
