STC to supply 20,000 tonnes of rice to Dhaka
The state-owned trading firm STC is planning to supply 20,000 tonne of para-boiled rice worth Rs 30 crore to Bangladesh under its Humanitarian Assistance Programme.
STC on its website said the supplier should deliver Indian para-boiled rice that conforms the quality norms of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.
It should be packed in 50 kg PP woven bags, which can withstand moisture during shipment. It specified that the para-boiled rice should be delivered at Chittagong port within a maximum period of three weeks from the date of confirmed order.
These transactions should be treated as local sale, hence no export incentives are applicable on these supplies, STC said.
The STC tender comes soon after the government permitted the export of 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati rice to Dhaka by West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corporation Ltd.
Despite there being a restriction on the export of non-basmati rice, the government has been giving exemptions from time to time for export of specific quantity of rice to different countries on humanitarian ground.
Last year, the government had put a ban on non-basmati rice exports to build buffer stock and improve domestic supplies.
Following complaints from exporters, the ban was partially lifted by fixing the minimum export price of $500 per tonne in the international market to augment the domestic supplies of common varieties.
