Spice exports grow 20% to 98,570 tonne in a month

Spice exports has registered a 20% growth to touch 98,570 tonne during the April-May period of the current fiscal. In value terms, the export grew at 28% to a level of Rs 885.04 crore.

KOCHI: Spice exports has registered a 20% growth to touch 98,570 tonne during the April-May period of the current fiscal. In value terms, the export grew at 28% to a level of Rs 885.04 crore.

In dollar terms, the export registered an increase of 29% to $214.88 million. Spice oils and oleoresins, including mint products, contributed 35% of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 27% followed by pepper 11%, cumin 7% and turmeric 4%.

During the first two months of the current fiscal, the export of pepper, chilli, coriander, cumin, celery, other seeds, vanilla, curry powder, spice oils and oleoresins and mint products are higher both on terms of quantity and value. Export of cardamom (large), ginger and fennel have shown a decline both in terms of quantity and value as compared with last year.

In the case of cardamom (small), turmeric, garlic, and other miscellaneous spices, the export earnings have increased but quantity of exports have declined.

The highest growth in exports was witnessed in the case of cumin and other seeds. Cumin exports increased by 198% in quantity terms to touch 6,500 tonne. In value terms the exports stood at Rs 63.83 crore registering an increase of 190%.

The decline in production of cumin in Turkey and Syria is the main reason for higher exports of the product from the country. Increase in exports of other seeds is mainly on account of the higher import of mustard by Nepal.

The export target of 425,000 tonne valued at Rs 4,350 crore. In dollar terms the target is $1,025 million. The achievement in the first two months is 23% of the quantity and 21 % in dollar terms.
