South India Cotton Association to form Agro Foundation

COIMBATORE: With the absence of a coordinated agency to take care of future needs of cotton and its growers, the South India Cotton Association (SICA) is taking the lead to form an 'Agro Foundation,' focusing on various aspects.

As the research on cotton was mainly done in Government agencies and agricultural Universities, there should be an agency to take care of the future needs of cotton and farmers, SICA sources said.

Stating that farmers needed equipment for harvesting and transport, which at present is done by manual labour, the sources said the requirements of farmers cannot wait for the present system of research and seeds alone.

"Anything can wait but not agriculture. Hence private sector NGOs should be encouraged to come in all these areas," the sources said.

Formation of an agro foundation to take up various activities in these must be promoted and SICA has been promoting this idea, which would take the available technologic information to the farmers, they said.

As part of its plan, an initial interactive meeting was held recently at Avinashi near here, which decided to go to farmers and assist them in many areas like information on current developments and markets, the sources said.
