Addressing a press conference here Union minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh said that the Tea Board would be asked to reorient its subsidy scheme as to encourage orthodox tea production.
Presently, the orthodox tea production accounts for just 10% of the total tea production in the country. However, the major buyers like the countries in Europe and Russia are importers of orthodox tea. This is considered as one of the reasons for the decline in tea exports to Russia from the country.
