RAJKOT: Rajkot District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, which is now part of the Amul brand, plans to expand its processing capacity from 1 lakh litres per day to 5 lakh litres per day.

The unit will initially be expanded to handle 2.5-3 lakh litres per day and later, to 5 lakh litres. The expansion will require an investment of Rs 10 crore.

According to the expansion plan, a chilling plant will be set up while the capacity of another will be increased. While the new chilling plant will be set up at Jamkandorna with a capacity of 40,000-50,000 litres per day, the chilling centre at Wankaner will see a capacity expansion from the current 25,000 litres per day to 1 lakh litres. The capacity at the new Jamkandorna plant can be expanded to 80,000 litres.

According to Rajkot District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union managing director AC Sinha, food habits are changing fast and people are moving towards milk products.

"We, therefore, have to increase milk handling capacity to cope with the growing demand," he said. Apart from the expansion, the dairy has also planned bulk milk cooling (BMCs) units at different places in Rajkot district. “For these units, we have already sought permission from the state government and Centre, and 40 such units will be set up in different talukas and villages of the district,” Mr Sinha told ET.

This project will cost around Rs 5 crore and will be completed in the next three years.
