Punjab, Haryana to focus on maize, pulses
The governments of Punjab and Haryana have estimated to raise area under cultivation of maize, pulses and cotton in the range of 25 to 150% during the coming kharif season.
According to the estimates provided by the respective agriculture departments, Punjab would bring an area of 55,000 hectares under pulses cultivation against last year���s 22,000 hectares with targeted output of 42,000 tonnes. Similarly, Haryana has planned to bring 90,000 hectares under pulses crop hectares with estimated output of 94,000 against last year���s 53,000.
For maize, Punjab has earmarked 2 lakh hectares with targeted output of 5.20 lakh tonnes, compared to last year���s 1.5 lakh hectares. Haryana would bring 20,000 hectares of land under maize cultivation with output of 53,000 tonnes, which would be up by 6,000 hectares.
In regard to the cotton, Punjab has targeted to allocate 6.5 lakh hectares, an increase of 46,000 hectares and the state is estimating an output of 24.9 lakh bales in the kharif season.
Haryana has also decided raise the area under cotton crop to 6 lakh hectares this season from 4.8 lakh hectares last year with an estimated output of 22.9 lakh bales up by 4.1 lakh. For oilseed crop, Punjab has dedicated 25,000 hectares with output figure of 16,000 tonnes in kharif season.
