Punjab develops new HYV wheat

New varieties of wheat, raya (mustard), gobhi sarson and linseed has been developed for cultivation in Punjab.

CHANDIGARH: New varieties of wheat, raya (mustard), gobhi sarson and linseed has been developed for cultivation in Punjab.

The bread wheat variety, PBW-550, would have an average yield of 50.9 quintal per hectare. It will outperform the yield of the PBW 343 and PBW 502 by 7.2% and 6.5%, respectively. Further, it will be resistant to yellow rust, which is a serious threat to the wheat crop.

Meeting international norms for oil quality by having less than 2% erucic acid, the raya variety RLC-1 is better than PBR 210. The yield of the new variety is 1,655 kg per hectare, which is 10% more than the conventional one. Also, it possesses better tolerance to alternaria blight under both natural and artificial condition.

The GSC-6 variety of gobhi sarson adheres to international canola quality norm and possesses tolerance to mustard aphia. The average yield per hectare of 1,517 kg excells the GSC-5 variety by a margin of 11.8%. The LC-2063 variety of linseed has bold seed size and possesses higher oil content (+1.2%) compared to LC-2023. With an average yield of 1,222 kg per hectare, it out yielded LC 2023 by 8.5%.
