NEW DELHI: Potato prices surged 3 per cent to Rs 1,006.10 per quintal in futures trade as speculators enlarged positions amid strong demand in the spot market against tight supplies from producing regions.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, potato for delivery in far-month April spurted by Rs 29.30, or 3 per cent to Rs 1,006.10 per quintal in business turnover of 187 lots.

The potato for delivery in March jumped Rs 24.60, or 2.47 per cent to Rs 1,022.10 per quintal in 615 lots.

Analysts said besides strong demand in the spot market, tight supplies from producing regions mainly pushed up potato prices at futures trade.
