Poor monsoon to hit oilseed output in K’taka, Andhra

Karnataka and AP appear set to produce sharply lower quantities of critical oilseed crops - sunflower, sesame and groundnut - but other states are expected to make up for the shortfall.

BANGALORE: Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh appear set to produce sharply lower quantities of critical oilseed crops sunflower, sesame and groundnut but other states are expected to make up for the shortfall, according to the Solvent Extractors Association of India.

The area under oilseed cultivation in Karnataka this year has fallen to 1.26 mn hectares from 1.5 mn hectares last year while in Andhra Pradesh it has slipped to 1.85 mn hectares from 1.99 mn hectares.

However, major oilseed producing states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra have expanded the area under oilseed crops, the association said, basing its information on data from the Union agriculture ministry.

Nationally, total oilseed cultivation is spread across 17.5 mn hectares this kharif season compared to 17.5 mn hectares in 2007. The area under sunflower across India had fallen by nearly a fourth to 5.4 lakh hectares as on September 5, mainly because of delayed rains in northern Karnataka and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

Karnataka was cultivating the crop on only 3.7 lakh hectares this year as against 5.1 lakh hectares 2007.

In Andhra Pradesh it has fallen to 59,000 hectares from 1.2 lakh hectares. Karnataka, a major oilseeds producer, has been affected by delayed rains and non-availability of critical inputs, including fertilisers.
