Par panel, govt differ on MSP to coffee growers
Unimpressed with the government’s reluctance to give minimum support price (MSP) for coffee, a parliamentary panel has again asked the commerce ministry to consider fixing MSP or restructure a special fund meant for stabilising prices of the crop.
“The committee strongly feel that due protection should be provided to coffee growers, particularly during distress years, either through an MSP mechanism or a restructured price stabilisation fund scheme (PSFS),” the parliamentary standing committee on commerce has said in its latest report.
The committee, chaired by BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi, also observed that PSFS has not served the purpose for which it was introduced. Only 11,562 coffee growers have been registered under the scheme as against a target of 3.42 lakh, it said.
Earlier, in response to the committee’s recommendation regarding provision of MSP for coffee, the government had said that MSP was not necessary because there was a PSFS scheme.
The government had said that fixing MSP for coffee was not feasible in view of the free market era where prices are primarily determined by demand and supply factors.
