MUMBAI: Maharashtra Government should accord the status of essential commodity to onion to curb rising prices, state Congress consumer affairs cell chairman Kanhaiyalal Gidwani said.
The government should also declare support price for onions on the lines of the support price for wheat, sugar and cotton, Gidwani told reporters.
The retail price of onions has reached Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg in the market, he said.
The price rise is not beneficial to onion growers but an artificial scarcity of onion has been created by some vested interests in the market, he said.
Gidwani said he had written letters to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Marketing Minister Harshwardhan Patil, seeking the state government's intervention in controlling the onion prices.
The government is ignoring the onion price rise issue as it may not consider the issue a serious one, he said.
