Onion production likely to jump by 20% in '07

Onion production in the current Kharif season is likely to go up due to an expected increase in the area under coverage.

NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said onion production in the current Kharif season is likely to go up by 20 per cent due to an expected increase in the area under coverage, while maintaining that prices of the edible bulb has come down in the last six months.

The modal price of onion in the first week of August was Rs 940 per quintal as against Rs 1,251 per quintal in the first week of February, 2007, Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He, however, said prices of tomato and potato have increased in the same period.

"During the same period, prices of tomato and potato have increased from Rs 749 to Rs 1,124 per quintal and Rs 482 to Rs 997 per quintal respectively," Bhuria said.

Lower market arrivals, lean production season and higher demand are some of the reasons for the recent rise in prices of vegetables, he said.

Replying to another query, the minister said the area under onion cultivation in the ongoing Kharif season is expected to increase by 16.36 per cent to 1.17 lakh hectares from 1 lakh hectare in 2006.
