Onion prices may not fall soon
According to NHRDF estimates, there may be 3-5% damage to the crop this season due to untimely rains in some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka last month.

NEW DELHI: There is unlikely to be any sharp fall in onion prices, despite positive indications of a good crop. “Onion production in kharif 2007 is likely to be around 17 lakh tonne, up 29%,” said National Horticulture Research & Development Foundation (NHRDF) director RP Gupta.
He said the rise in production is expected after the acreage under onion cultivation went up 28% to 1.28 lakh hectare from 1,00,000 hectare in 2006. According to NHRDF estimates, there may be 3-5% damage to the crop this season due to untimely rains in some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka last month.
It estimates onion production in Maharashtra and Rajasthan will be up 48% and 15%, respectively.
