Onion prices down by Rs 2-3 a kg in Delhi's wholesale market
Onion prices on Friday declined to about Rs 19 a kg in the wholesale market but its benefit is yet to reach the common man, who have been paying high price for a fortnight.
Although the wholesale offering ranged between Rs 16-19, the organised retailers like Reliance sold onion at about Rs 20 a kg. Local vendors, in the neighbourhood markets were, selling its at over Rs 25 a kg.
"The wholesale prices on Friday fell to Rs 16-19 per kg from Rs 18-22 yesterday. The rates are expected to come down to Rs 10-12 per kg in a week," wholesale trader Sher Singh of the 'Jagdish Kumar Rajesh Kumar' company at Azadpur Mandi said.
Singh attributed the decline in the prices of onion, which is a politically sensitive commodity and an important ingredient in any Indian cuisine, to reports of export ban by the government and arrival of Kharif crops.
Moreover, he said the demand for onion from traders has also slackened during the week on expectation that prices would fall further with the arrival of new crops at mandis in Maharashtra the largest producing state.
At Azadpur wholesale market, the arrivals of onion have increased on Friday to 960 tonnes from 820 tonnes yesterday, another trader said. Moreover, arrival of 1,440 tonnes are expected to reach on Sunday from Maharashtra.
In an effort to reduce onion prices, NAFED, the canalising agency for the onion export, the process of issuing non-objection certificates to exporters, besides hiking the minimum export price by 50 dollars for all destinations to discourage shipments to overseas market.
The Commerce Ministry, yesterday, announced restriction on onion exports and said license would be required for its sale overseas.
