Onion export price remains unchanged for March

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation has decided not to change the minimum export price of onion for the next month in view of continued slump in the domestic price of the edible bulb.

NEW DELHI: The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) on Wednesday decided not to change the minimum export price of onion for the next month in view of continued slump in the domestic price of the edible bulb.

The MEP of onion will remain at February level, which is 165-390 dollar a ton.

"Today, we have decided not to change the MEP for March as the domestic prices remain at around Rs 250 per quintal in the major growing belts of Lasalgaon and Pimpalgaon in Maharashtra," NAFED Vice Chairman C B Holkar told reporters.

He said the onion export from the country has declined to 8.70 lakh tons so far in the current fiscal, compared to about 11 lakh tons in the year-ago period.

NAFED, along with 12 other agencies, fixes the onion MEP every month. The MEP for February was reduced by 20 dollar a ton to 165-390 dollar a ton for most of the destinations. However, for West Asia, the major importers, the MEP is 180-210 dollar a ton.

Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore are the other major markets for Indian onions.
