NEW DELHI: Public sector trading company MMTC today invited bids for sale of 53,000 tonnes of yellow peas (white matar) in the domestic market as part of efforts by the government to rein in pulses prices.
The yellow peas, for which bids have been invited, are in the process of import, the company said in the tender.
MMTC said bidders would have to buy a minimum of 1,000 tonnes. The company is importing 35,000 tonnes of yellow peas at Vishakhapatnam and Kolkata from Canada and 18,000 tonnes at Kolkata port from France. The cargo would land by next month.
The last date of submission of tender is April 11 and bids would also be opened on the same date, the company said.
MMTC had recently invited bids to sell 1,000 tonnes of arhar (tur) each from Myanmar and Africa. Another government owned trading firm PEC had also floated a tender early this week for sale of 1,840 tonnes of arhar and 1,797 tonnes urad.
PEC has also floated a global tender for import of 6,000 tonnes each of urad, moong and arhar, which will be opened on April 12. The company wants that 9,000 tonnes each should arrive at Mumbai and Chennai ports during May-June this year.
India had imported about 18 lakh tonnes of pulses in the last financial year to improve domestic supply.
Import by private traders stood at 16.95 lakh tonnes till 2006-end while state-owned companies have contracted 1.03 lakh tonnes till March 8.
Zero customs duty on pulses import has been extended till August 1, while export of the commodities (except Kabuli chana) has been banned till August.
