MMTC floats tender to sell 10,000 tons imported chana

State-run trading firm MMTC has invited bids for sale of 10,000 tonne of imported chana (chick pea) in the domestic market.

NEW DELHI: State-run trading firm MMTC has invited bids for sale of 10,000 tonne of imported chana (chick pea) in the domestic market.

"About 8,000 tonne of chana would arrive this month while the rest 2,000 tonne would be shipped in December 2007," the company said in its tender.

The bids would close on November 22 and a decision on the tender would be taken by November 30, MMTC said, adding that the commodity would be of Australian origin grown during 2006-07 season.

Chana will be sold in lots of 2,000 tonne or more. "The material is expected to arrive Mumbai port in November- December 2007 and January, 2008," it said.

MMTC said parties bidding for the full quantity will be given preference.

Agriculture and Food Minister Shard Pawar had said in the Economic Editors' Conference: "As per initiative of government, the state agencies -- STC, MMTC and PEC and NAFED -- would target to import 15 lakh tonne of pulses. Out of the total contracts of 12.18 lakh tonne made by these agencies, 6.44 lakh tonne has arrived up to October 30."

The government announced import of pulses through these four public sector firms in April to augment the domestic supply and in turn stabilise prices. It is also extending 15 per cent subsidy for importing pulses.
