KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre and the West Bengal government to state what steps they were contemplating for revival of closed tea gardens in North Bengal.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice T Sen asked the Centre and the state government to file an affidavit within two weeks stating whether any revival package has been prepared for the closed tea gardens in the state.

The state government was also asked to report whether trafficking of girls was taking place in the area by criminals taking advantage of the financial mess that the workers and their families were in.

A PIL seeking revival of 18 tea gardens, closed since 2002, in the Dooars area of North Bengal, and protection of girls from traffickers was moved today by a social activist from Jalpaiguri district -- Amitabha Chakraborti.

Several tea gardens were closed in the area due to different reasons leading to hardship for the garden workers and their families.
