Gujjar stir slows down mustard seed arrivals
The agitation engulfing the mustard belt of the state - Dausa, Kherli, Mahua, Alwar, Bayana, Kota and Bharatpur - has badly hit the arrivals of mustard seeds in the mandi.
The market is dull with both traders and farmers shying away from any transaction. The rates at Jaipur market is ruling at around Rs 2,920-2,930 a quintal as there are few takers. But if the agitation continues for 10 days, the wholesale rates of mustard seeds may not rise but the rates of mustard oil is likely gallop at the terminal markets, he said.
Apart from traders, the processors are also facing acute shortage of mustard seeds. The roads are blocked and mustard oil trucks are seen stranded on the roads.
There are few mills which had to stop crushing as they are already hands full with processed oil which could not be delivered due to transportation problems. While a few processors had to reduce their crushing capacity by 30% due to shortage of raw mustard seeds, a Bharatpur-based processor Ram Lal Agrawal said.
The inclement weather, rains and frost have lowered the yield by 25%. The market which started off at a price range of Rs 2600-2750 in February is likely to end in mid June in the price band of Rs 2900-3050.
The market was buoyant at the start if the season as there were fears of low production and traders piled up the stock initially. Later on, with the cooling down of international prices of crude palm oil and soya oil, the prices stabilised in the month of March and April and then again it started looking up from May. The prices of mustard seeds may touch Rs 4000 a quintal before the next season begins, Mr Goyal said.
