NEW DELHI: Following a recommendation from the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the UPA Government may pitch in with wheat supplies to strife-torn Myanmar.
Highly place sources stated that 2000 metric tonnes of wheat would be exported to Myanmar during next few months to help the neighbouring country in getting over the shortage for wheat and wheat products.
The External Affairs Ministry has made the recommendation with the argument that export of wheat to Myanmar will help bringing about peace on the North Eastern borders and also help development of the seven north-eastern states.
Currently, there is a ban on export of wheat following demand – supply mismatch in the country. The government has imposed a ban on export of wheat till December 31 this year.
Currently, wheat is being quoted at Rs 950 per quintal in Delhi markets while it is being sold at Rs 1250 per quintal in Mumbai wholesale markets. Cabinet Committee on Prices (CCP) headed by Cabinet Secretary B.K.Chaturvedi will meet later this evening to take a final decision on export of wheat to Myanmar.
