The centre on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking modifications in its order on filed trials of genetically modified (GM) crops.
The apex court in its May 8 order had permitted filed trials of GM crops approved by the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) subject to the condition that their field should be at least 200 metres away from normal crops.
The government said GEAC has taken a view that the isolation distance recommended by the sub committee should be in harmony with the Indian minimum seed certificate standard.
The application annexed a crop wise isolation distance and additional containment measures for field trials of GM crops including Cotton, groundnut, brinjal, rice, tomato, castor, cauliflower, cabbage, mustard, okra and rapeseed.
Cotton which is often cross pollinated with insects, the minimum isolation prescribed under MSCS and sub committee is 50m. For, rice, a self pollinating crop with wind, the minimum isolation prescribed under MSCS and recommended by the sub committee is 200m.
