The government on Monday said it has provided nearly Rs 49 crore subsidy till November 2009 under the special purpose tea fund for redeveloping old tea gardens.

NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said it has provided nearly Rs 49 crore subsidy till November 2009 under the special purpose tea fund for redeveloping old tea gardens.

The Rs 48.69 crore has been used to replant 9,902 hectares and rejuvenate 3,685 hectares of old tea gardens.

The government had set up the special purpose tea fund (SPTF) on April 1, 2007, with the objective of large scale replanting/rejuvenation of old tea gardens for improving their production and productivity, an official statement said.

Under the scheme, the government provides 25 per cent of the cost of replanting or rejuvenation of a unit as subsidy and 50 per cent as loan. The rest has to come from the beneficiaries.

The mission of the scheme is to redevelop 2.12 lakh hectares of uneconomic tea areas. It was proposed that during the 11th Plan-Period, replantation and rejuvenation would be done on 56,795 hectares and 14,075 hectares respectively.

India produced 90.53 million kg of tea in November 2009, up from 89.65 million kg produced in the same month previous year. Exports rose by 23 per cent to 19.2 million kg compared to 15.6 million kg in November 2008.
