Govt plans to register more commodities as GIs
The government has initiated the process to register various varieties of coffee, pepper, cardamom and other commodities as Geographical Indications to protect country's trade interests.
While Coffee Board would register Monsooned Malabar, Spices Board has identified Malabar Pepper, Tellichery Pepper, Alleppey Gree Cardamom and Coorg Cardamom for registration.
The decision was taken during a meeting called by Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh with Coffee Board, Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Geographical Indications, an official release said.
APEDA would also register Basmati rice in the country, although India and Pakistan would also be jointly filing the GI application in the US and Europe.
The consultation process for registering Nilgiri and Assam tea has been started, the release said.
Ramesh also asked APEDA to take up registration of Alphonso mango.
