Government package helps tea gardens reopen

Consequent to the rehabilitation package announced by the government for the 33 closed tea gardens in Kerala, West Bengal and Assam, 10 of the gardens have reopened while others are likely to start functioning soon.

NEW DELHI: Consequent to the rehabilitation package announced by the government for the 33 closed tea gardens in Kerala, West Bengal and Assam, 10 of the gardens have reopened while others are likely to start functioning soon.

A rehabilitation package was announced by the government in June for 33 tea gardens which were closed on April 1 this year.

"Nine tea gardens out of the 17 closed in Kerala have reopend consequent to the package announced recently, five are in the process of settling their accounts and would open soon," an official release said here.

It said in West Bengal one garden out of 14 closed has reopened, while three were in the process of being taken over by a new management. Others were also expected to reopen soon.

Two closed tea gardens in Assam have got new management and were likely to restart.

The package provides for restructuring of outstanding bank dues, provision of fresh working capital with interest subsidy from government, waiver of outstanding loan dues to Tea board and PF dues settlement.

Once the accounts of these gardens are regularised, they will become eligible for term loan for replanting under the Special Purpose tea fund and upfront subsidy for the machinery items under Quality Upgradation Scheme of Tea Board, the release added.
