Good times continue in spice sector

In Kochi clove, nutmeg and mace prices registered smart gains.

KOCHI: The good times are continuing in the spice sector with the increasing trend in prices bringing in good fortunes for the spice growers throughout the country.
The average prices of spices across different mandis in the country show that the increasing trend in prices is continuing into the period upto October, 2006. The figures for April to October 2006-07 show that for most of the spices the prices are highest in the last 3 to 4 years.
The average price of pepper, for example, stood at Rs 91.35 per kg, the highest since 2003-04. The price of small cardamom declined from Rs 361 per kg in 2003-04 to Rs 215 per kg in 2005-06 only to bounce back to Rs 352 per kg in the April to October period of the current fiscal.
Chilli price that stood at Rs 39.14 in the Guntur market 4 years back is Rs 48.04 per kg in April to October, 2006-07. Coriander, cumin, fenugreek are the spices that registered moderate gains while fennel increased from Rs 56 per kg to Rs 90.55 per kg in the Mumbai market. Two spices which saw a doubling of prices in the Mumbai market are garlic and tamarind.
In Kochi clove, nutmeg and mace prices registered smart gains. Prices were more or less the same for ajwan seed, celery, turmeric. A fall in price was seen only in a few items like ginger, mustard seed etc. In the Delhi market, the saffron prices also fell during the period under review.
