Gold purchases rise in WB on Akshaya Tritiya

Jewellery shops in West Bengal witnessed a spurt in the sales of gold on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya today which marks the start of the financial year for gold merchants.

KOLKATA: Jewellery shops in West Bengal witnessed a spurt in the sales of gold on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya today which marks the start of the financial year for gold merchants.

The tradition has been followed in the state for long as gold merchants mostly open the 'haal khata', or the new account books, to mark the start of a financial year.

"Gold purchases rise on this day every year," a spokesman of renowned jewellery chain, P C Chandra Jewellers, said.

Gold merchants believe that opening of the new account books would bring luck and business would prosper forever as reflected by the word 'akshaya'.
