Festive season keeps poultry sector healthy

COIMBATORE: Poultry producers in the state have enough reasons to cheer up with a perk-up in demand for products in the festive season and a steady rise in winter consumption leading to a hike in poultry prices.
The Christmas and New Year festivities, which sped up the surge in demand for poultry products, are followed this month by the big festival Pongal, which too is expected to support the rising consumption of chicken, according to trade sources.
The National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal, which met on Monday to fix up the farm gate table egg price, has hiked the price to Rs 1.65 from last week’s Rs 1.50. Palladam-based Broiler Co-ordination Committee (BCC) has chosen to fix the wholesale price at Rs 36 a kg — a hike of Rs 2 a kg, considering the sustained demand in TN and Kerala.
“Steady rise in winter consumption of eggs in the North also has led us to increase the prices as the offtake of broiler chicken and shell egg has moved up in recent weeks”, Dr P Selvaraj, chairman, NECC, Namakkal zone, told ET.
“During the last winter, we exported 20-25 lakh eggs per day to the North and this year also we plan to export in similar numbers” he added. Trade sources in Namakkal anticipated the current price trend to last till next month.
