Exclusive SEZ for Shankar 6 cotton

AHMEDABAD: Two Gujarat-based entrepreneurs are planning to set up a commodity-specific special economic zone — one of its kind in the country. It will be a textile SEZ which will be different from the rest on one count: the SEZ will only have units which manufacture end-products using Shankar 6 cotton.

Promoters of PR Tradelink, a Vapi-based cotton exporting company, are firming up plans to set up an SEZ to promote Shanker 6 cotton. "Gujarat is a leading grower of Shankar 6. We are setting up an SEZ which will be a one-stop-shop to treat this variety of cotton — right from ginning to spinning to weaving and garmenting from this cotton variety," said promoter Naimish Ravani.

The promoters have started getting inquiries including from some foreign yarn importers who want to set up units in an SEZ. "Presently, cotton has to be transported to Coimbatore for ginning. Our estimates suggest that per kg transportation cost is Rs 6. We will provide world-class ginning facilities in the SEZ," Mr Ravani said.
