The government on Thursday said retail prices of essential food items like wheat, sugar and pulses remained steady or declined in most centres of the country during the week ended April 17.

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday said retail prices of essential food items like wheat, sugar and pulses remained steady or declined in most centres of the country during the week ended April 17. Prices of wheat remained stable in almost all centres except two cities. Wheat prices in Bhopal surged while in Ahmedabad, they slipped during the week, an official statement stated.

According to retail price data of the ministry of consumer affairs, sugar rates declined in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Shillong and Hyderabad, while they remained steady in other centres, it added. Among pulses, prices of gram dal shot up in Hyderabad, but in Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bhopal and Shillong a declining trend was seen. Tur dal rates were steady in most centres but increased in Mumbai, the statement pointed out.

The government said: Prices of sugar, wheat, atta (flour), tea (loose) and mustard oil held steady for one week. Prices of rice, wheat, tur dal, groundnut oil, milk and potato held steady for one month. The inflation rate rose to over 7% by the end of last fiscal mainly due to increase in prices of food articles, and the government has taken a slew of measures to bring it down.

In Delhi, gram dal rates slipped by Rs 1 to Rs 37 a kg during the week. Vanaspati rates also dipped from Rs 75 a kg to Rs 73 a kg, it said. On pulses imports, it said that about 1.2 million tonne (mt) have already arrived at Indian ports. Of this 1.03 mt have been disposed of. Government has contracted to import a total of 1.41 mt of pulses from agencies like MMTC, Nafed and STC in 2007-08, it added.
