Drought dries up tea output
NEW DELHI: Indias tea production in July dipped to 126.9 million kg 4 million kg less than a year earlier because of a decline in output in West Bengal, though high prices pushed up its export marginally, according to the Tea Board.

Interestingly, tea output in drought-hit Assam, which accounts for over half of the countrys total production, rose marginally in July over the level reached last year.

The drop in July, however, widened the shortfall in output in India, the worlds second-largest tea producer, by close to 16 million kg at 460.9 million kg so far this year as tea crop was dented in April and May after drought hit parts of Assam.

Tea exports rose to 19.5 million kg in July from 18.5 million kg a year before. The export from January to July, however, fell by about 15 million kg to 94 million kg.

In value terms, the rise in export is more significant. India exported tea worth close to Rs 1,258.07 crore till July this year, compared with Rs 1,161.60 crore in the year-ago period, despite a dip in volume.

An industry official said high prices of Indian tea in the global market due to a surge in demand have boosted the export in value terms. The average price rose to Rs 133.80 a kg till July from Rs 106.27 in the year before.
