With Dhanteras on Monday gold buying is experiencing its seasonal spurt. Dhanteras is considered a day auspicious to buy gold.

Festivals or feats, we like to say it with gold. We advertise the gold on our person and we whisper about the bars and biscuits making a neat fiscal snack in the lockers.

Wear it, flaunt it, hoard it or eye it, this 24-carat of blinding, blingy brilliance is a 24-hour obsession with us. The West can rave about the rarity and sophistication of platinum and delight in the dazzle of diamonds, but we, oh boy, are sold on gold!

According to the World Gold Council, India accounted for 32 per cent of the global total gold purchase of gold in 2010.

Gold bullion and coins are in high demand along with jewellery as more and more people now turn to the precious metal as a safe investment option at a time the country's stock markets seem unstable amid the global economic uncertainty, jewellers said.


The fall in gold prices in international markets from about $1,900 an ounce in September to about $1,600 an ounce in October has also boosted the buying spree.
