Cotton arrival in Haryana up by 50,000 qtl
The cotton arrival in Haryana has moved up by 50,000 quintals during this season against last year's arrival.
The total arrival of cotton in the state has risen to 20.52 lakh quintals so far this year against the arrival of 20.02 lakh quintals in the corresponding period last year, said an official of Haryana Agricultural Marketing Board.
Significantly, the cotton growers are also fetching handsome returns this year as the prices of the commodity has risen up by Rs 400-500 per quintal during the Kharif marketing season. The rates of 'Dhesi' cotton stood at Rs 2,200-2,300 per quintal against Rs 1,700-1,800 per quintal last year.
The rate of 'American' cotton has moved to Rs 2,400-2,450 per quintal this year compared to Rs 1,900-2,000 per quintal.
Haryana, this year, reduced area under cultivation of cotton by over 40,000 hectares. Cotton this year was grown at an area of 4.86 lakh hectares against an area of 5.30 lakh hectares a year ago.
The area under Bt cotton grew from 10 per cent of total area of cotton cultivation during last year to 60 per cent this year, said an official.
However, the state was expecting substantial jump in cotton yield from 582 kg lint per hectare in last year to 650 kg lint per hectare this year.
Cotton in Haryana is mainly grown in districts like Hisar, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Jind, Mahendragarh.
