Coir Board plans big export push
The Coir Board has set an export target of Rs 1000-crore for the 11th Five-Year Plan and hopes to achieve it by strengthening its existing markets, exploring virgin markets and improving value addition and market development assistance.
In order to increase the market penetration in the US, principal market for Indian coir products, the board+ is planning to send a 50-member delegation including exporters and officials to the country during this financial year, according to sources. Of the total coir exports of Rs 508.5 crore achieved by the country in ’05-06, the US accounted for over 40% of the value.
Europe is the second largest buyer with the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France being the important buyers. Along with that, the board is also exploring virgin markets. Geo-textiles and coir pith are two products that are increasingly becoming popular in new markets. Geo-textiles is already a hit in the Europe, which is Green conscious.
The recent formation of Indian chapter of International Erosion Control Association is expected to help in the promotion of geo-textiles. Coir Board sources said orders are in the pipeline from West Asia and South Korea for coir pith, which is the waste from coir products manufacture.
It is generally used as manure for plants. The board will also focus on improving the value addition and packaging with an eye on increased exports.
