Coir Board launches Golden Fibre Plus scheme
Coir Board proposes to launch a new scheme called 'Golden Fibre Plus' with assistance from the State Bank of Travancore (SBT).
Under the scheme, SBT would give loans of Rs 35,000 to each coir worker to construct spinning sheds and procure raw material and equipment, Board spokesperson told reporters.
The board would be giving a 25 per cent subsidy on the loan amount and the workers would have to repay only Rs 25,000 over a 7 year period, he said.
Presently, women coir workers are able to work only less than 100 days a year as they have to work in open areas. The board hopes that once they are provided with sheds, the workers would be able to work for 200 days a year.
In the first phase of the project, 400 women workers from four panchayats in Alapuzha district would be covered.
The Central Coir Research Institute at Alapuzha has come up with a new technology to treat unsoaked husk. This method has received the approval from the state Pollution Control Board, CCRI Director U S Sharma, said.
Vegetable oil and water emulsion is used to spray on the husk to make it soft.
Sharma said the National Research Development Corporation at New Delhi will give a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the board to popularise the new technology.
The board would be giving Rs 10,000 each to 20 cooperatives societies and this amount can be used to procure sprayers.
