Coffee, rubber estates to get replanting fund

India plans to launch a fund to replant ageing coffee, rubber, spice, cashew and coconut plantations, the finance minister said in the 2007-08 federal budget on Wednesday.

NEW DELHI: India plans to launch a fund to replant ageing coffee, rubber, spice, cashew and coconut plantations, the finance minister said in the 2007-08 federal budget on Wednesday.

A similar $1.1 billion fund for tea gardens was set up in December and is about to be launched. Tea bush replanting should take place over about 200,000 hectares (494,200 acres). No details of the expanded replanting plan were available.

Junior Trade Minister Jairam Ramesh said in February the government would set up two separate funds to bring an additional 50,000 hectares under coffee and a similar area under rubber.
