India is expected to post a 16% rise in castor seeds production during the current fiscal over previous one.

AHMEDABAD: India is expected to post a 16% rise in castor seeds production during the current fiscal over previous one. The joint study by Nielsen India and Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) estimates the total castor production of castor seeds at about 9.1 lakh tonne during the current fiscal compared with 7.8 lakh tonne during FY07.

According to the estimates, total area under castor crop in India for the FY08 is 7.5lakh hectare, up 7% from 6.9 lakh hectare during the previous fiscal. Similarly, the yield per hectare too has increased at the same rate. The castor seed yield increased 1,216 kg a hectare during the current fiscal over 1,123 kg in previous fiscal, registering growth of 8%, the joint study reads.

SEA Castor Crop Survey: 2007-08 was discussed by the industry representatives and experts during the 6th International Seminar on Castor Seed, Castor Oil and its value added products in Ahmedabad on Sunday. According to the industry exports, the increase in the production would stabilise prices and also increase the exports. Interestingly, Gujarat, which is already leading the show in castor seed production, has strengthened its position further with 32% increase in its production. Gujarat alone produced 6.51 lakh tonne seeds. However, production by countrys third-largest castor seed producer Andhra Pradesh has dramatically gone down by 27%, from 1.1 lakh tonne in previous fiscal to 0.8 lakh tonne in FY08.

The acreage under castorseed cultivation has gone down by 7% to 2.3 lakh hectare during current fiscal. The productivity of Andhra Pradesh has gone down by 22% to 357 kg a hectare.

This year, castor producing districts of Gujarat have received 986 mm rain, which is 57% higher than average rainfall in these districts. Rainfall during sowing period was favourable this year, says the report. Rajasthan with 1.2 lakh hectare under castor is produced 1.4 lakh tonne castor seeds with 1,211 kg production per hectare.

This year castor producing districts of Rajasthan state have received 380 mm average rainfall, which is equal to average normal rainfall. Rainfall during sowing was adequate this year, says the joint study.
